An echocardiogram with color doppler will diagnose the cause of the murmur.    
Some murmurs are classified as "innocent" which means no reason for the murmur 
can be identified.   The heart and valves are functioning normally but a murmur 
can still be heard.  It is thought that these hearts are pumping a higher flow 
of blood.   It is also advised to have these dogs blood pressure monitored 
periodically.

IMO - Any pup who has a murmur at 16 weeks of age should be Echoed with color 
doppler.

A couple of years ago, I had a puppy with a level 3 heart murmur at six 
weeks.ï¿½ 
nterestingly, this was a puppy I had revived at birth.ï¿½ Two weeks later, the 
alve had closed and the murmur was gone.ï¿½ Sure am glad I didn't put him 
down!ï¿½ 
t is my understanding that a correct diagnosis cannot be made without an ekg at

I had to argue with one vet tech for an older puppy once that wanted me to

ave Parvo on it.ï¿½ I told her she must be a mind reader then as sometimes
ou bring in a dog/puppy that does not have the symptoms of Parvo, but a few
ays later is sick.ï¿½ I made her get a bleach mop and use it on the scale
efore I put my puppy down.ï¿½ The whole waiting room heard us arguing.ï¿½ This
as not my regular's vet's office.ï¿½ She was not happy!
