I have fed Purina Pro Plan for 17 yrs. I do add canned beef or chicken to the kibble and a small amount of water. I feed over ten dogs per day and have always had solid, small stools. The only two dogs that had any problem are father and daughter. The father started with EPI at the age of approx. 3yrs. and the daughter started with symptoms at approx. the same age. Both dogs now have firm stools, but eat only canned Purina EN, kibbled Purina EN, fresh cooked chicken breast (boneless & skinless) and Pet Tabs. One teaspoon of Viocase powder is sprinkled over their food per meal. They eat two meals per day. Both are also able to have Iams Large Dog Biscuits (1-2 per day each) without any problem. These dog biscuits are low in fat. I hope that this information can help someone else out there. Side note: The sire was pulled from stud immediately after he was diagnosed with EPI (blood test) and the daughter has never been bred. I also have another daughter (full litter mate to the EPI female) with no symptoms. I have not bred that female either. My fear is that while she is not affected, she may carry the gene as a recessive and pass it on. The only way to eliminate the problem of EPI is to remove the carriers from the gene pool. Since there is no DNA marker at this time, I have chosen not to breed that particular bloodline. Mary "If you think you're a person of some influence, try ordering someone else's dog around." I would like to thank everyone who has emailed and called me...it is so appreciated. There has been a lot of recommendations but here is what appears to be somewhat most similar to what is going on here. Several breeders have been feeding Purina pro plan performance and were getting similar experiences recently, dogs not keeping weight on, feeding more, shedding a lot, and hungry dogs. Several quit feeding the Purina and switched to Diamond-chicken and rice with no corn, wheat or soy. Their dogs have improved and they don't feed as much. That was one aspect of my kennel problem. The bigger problem is that the 2 year old bitch is always thin, but active and full of life. She has some loose stools once in a while but sometimes the odor is very foul. I would not describe her as starving and emaciated. I am taking her into the vet and will start with worming and especially look for whips and tape. I will also check the thyroid. We are going to start feeding her the Diamond Chicken and Rice and see what stools and weight changes might result. We pay 39.99 per bag - 7.00 check for Purina and I found a place that sells the Diamond for 23.99. Nice little savings since the Diamond is 40#'s and the Purina is only 37.5#. We are hoping for the best. If this does not produce some changes, we will go on with the other suggestions regarding EPI. Again thanks so much for all the input. Nice way to be able to communicate to the masses and reflects a lot of trends with out great dogs.
