[ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Must Be the Water, or possible some other drink

If there are internal problems that the new officers and board will
be expected to address, then the people drawing up the questionnaire for
all candidates to answer should be informed of them, so that the
questions will be pertinent, and so that the replies will address the
issues as they are, instead of the issues as perceived by those not "in
the know."
You all know I am not a breeder of German Shepherd Dogs...like one
of my dearest friends, I fear I would never be able to part with my
puppies should I decide to breed them; that, plus I've never really had
the room to raise a litter of Shepherds. Nevertheless, this is my
"heart" breed...the breed I place above all others.
It is also the breed with the best (and not so hot, too) people in
it...more knowledgeable people in this breed than in any other, overall,
plus the usual scattering of those who strive to always say the right
thing, no matter how transparent those efforts are.
When I started judging, I waited to apply for Shepherds until my
feet were quite wet' once I had Shepherds, I could have stopped there,
as I was happy. However, I didn't stop there. I completed the group,
and then got the Terrier group (another fun bunch there). I was warned
to watch out for the pressures and the politics in the Terrier group,
and my reply was "Hell, honey, I do Shepherds...no more political breed
exists!"
This is evidenced in the breed ring...judges put up their friends,
or the people who can "do" for them next time around, and yes, that IS
more prevalent in this breed than any other because of the specialty/all
breed divisions (perceived, not real) and the sheer number of specialty
shows. What we have to watch out for in this election particularly,
just as we have to watch out for it in the show ring, seems to be the
following:
The GSDCA can not afford to have "yes men" and women in position to
harm the club by paying back favors, or by seeking favor from others.
The GSDCA can not afford to have officers and board members whose
primary interests lie far afield from those of the majority of the
members. Not only must they be aware of these interests, they must be
willing to put their own agendas aside and act in the interest of the
club, not of themselves.
The GSDCA is here to serve the membership, not the interests of a
few. (Is that the same as the item before?)
This is not an election where you can vote for the person who seems
so friendly and helpful and lighthearted, who always "says the right
thing." This time, everyone who is entitled to vote has to find out
where every single candidate stands on the issues confronting the club,
whatever they may be, and on the issues facing all purebred dog fanciers
as well. Just because someone strikes your fancy by writing a nice post
to the list doesn't mean that person is the best one for the job...nor
is someone you never heard of necessarily better than the others.
The list is not made up of only PC members...perhaps when the
questionnaire comes out and the candidates share their views, those
responses will have to be put into the Members Only section of the PC
homepage...whatever it takes, it occurs to me that this is a very
important election, and every one of us had best pay a lot of close
attention to what goes on.
