hckryhillgsd@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Steve and Christine Grainger WWW.HICKORYHILLGSD.COM Tari, You have hit the nail on the head! Novices on this List need to LISTEN to the voices of experience. Before I begin, I want to stress that this is not about the quality of the dogs and bitches that went select, this is about the evaluation or lack of the evaluation process. As Tari states, movement IS the hardest thing to get and maintain, next in line would be backs. Size, type, pigment are easy to fix.MOVEMENT is also addressed quite extensively in our standard. When you judge by "numbers"such as using a "breed survey" type evaluation what ends up happening is that you don't allow yourself any wiggle room for give and take in the evaluation process and breeders and exhibitors are going to hold a judge accountable for those written evaluations. The fancy will question how one animal can be considered faulty yet another animal was rewarded that exhibited the same fault. It also allows breeders and exhibitors to compare notes and question consistency( or inconsistency) of the judging.By the time and exhibitor gets to the intersex competition, most are not novices.A judge needs to consider that it is an honor to judge dogs at a national level and that many breeders are "allowing" the judge to pass an evaluation on their dogs, even when most have breeding programs that far excel that of the person in the center of the ring! That in and of itself should be humbling! If any good came from the intersex judging, it proved that German style judging is not effective nor appreciated in the American ring, just as I am certain that our way of judging wouldn't not be appreciated in the German ring. When in Rome, one should do as the Romans do! What the ???? > > Something that amazed me at this Nationals -Breed Judging- was the fact that we were given the impression that our breed isn't about movement.? We were told this at the Dinner as well.? Where I believe in the "Total" dog, I also believe that movement is the HARDEST thing to breed into your dogs and TYPE is one of the easiest things to change.? I am Not sorry that I produce great moving dogs, and just because one person on one day doesn't feel this is as Important, I am Not going to change my whole breeding program.??? > We showcased?our dogs, got one good attempt at best, and paid a lot of money for a "Breed Survey" - something I don't need in this venue. . > > ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2008.
