Maybe it's me.......but no one can ever convince me that we can wear out a
German Shepherd
Dog with our length of stride and two legs. <G>
I've seen some of those shows at a slow walk for an hour and figured the
Judge just wanted
to eliminate the handler and go with the one that couldn't perform......or
paced........ <G>
( sorry.........I digress .........and lose control of my own humor at times
) <G>

"back in the day" ....<G>.......we had horses and I've taken dogs for miles
and miles with me
while riding the trails....down through the canyons, across the rivers and up
out of the canyons
and back down across the rivers and back out of the canyon and home....and
have yet to
see a dog "break down" and quit when it was doing what it wanted to do
whether we took
them for10 miles or 20 miles in rough terrain......but they all get more
efficient in their stride
once they settle in and quit chasing squirrels and birds.....<G>
Our oldest daughter and son in law are endurance runners and they take their
BOOKER
daughter with them on 30 mile runs while conditioning for the Western States
100 mile run.
MOLLY never quits. Her sire will literally herd for hours......and never
quit....back and
forth as he is holding the sheep on a C course as a reward when he does well
in training.

I do believe that our dogs can get very mentally tired of going in the same
circle over and
over while being called by their owner .........with a handler holding them
back by the neck.
Shoot........I'd get tired of doubling in an hour........<G>

I do agree with Carolyn McKenna that the best dog did win more during those
times.
More dogs were breeder/ owner handled, or by thier own kids or handled by
friends and
people that just loved the breed and loved to show or handle.

CAROLYN; I AGREE WITH A DOG LOOSE TO WALK AND RUN AT IT'S OWN PACE... IT
CAN GO FOR HOURS... IN THE SHOW RING, A DOG WHO IS BRED FOR EXTREME
EXAGGERATIONS, WILL NOT LAST OUT IN THE WOODS, NOR IN THE SHOW RING, IF WALKED
AND
WORKED...MANY OF SUCH CAN ACHIEVE A RAPID GAIT...BUT THEY CANNOT MAINTAIN
THE
WALK AND THE BREAKING UP AND DOWN OF CHANGING SPEEDS OVER A LONG PERIOD OF
TIME...

AN EXCELLENT SPECIMEN HAS POWER AND STRENGTH AND OUTSTANDING NATURAL
MUSCULATURE AND STRONG CORRECT LIGAMENTATION AND SPRINGS OFF THAT
REAR-END...IT
DOESN'T DRAG, NOR MERELY FOLLOW BEHIND ....IT POWERS THAT DOG FORWARD AND
WHEN IT IS BEING PERFORMED BY SUCH A PERFECT ONE, AT A WALK, IT IS BEAUTIFUL
TO
BEHOLD!! THE POWER OF THE SPRING AND FORWARD MOTION AND PERFECT COORDINATION
OF THE ENTIRE BODY IS A SIGHT NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN..
SOME MAY THINK OF A WALK, AS A FLAT, HEAVY-FOOTED ,PLODDING GAIT..
I AM TALKING OF THE WALK WHERE THE HANDLER KEEPS THAT DOG AT A PERFECT
SPEED....WHERE EVERY PART AND PIECE OF THAT DOG MUST BE WORKING LIKE A
PERFECT
MACHINE....WHAT I CALL THE 'PANTHER' MOVEMENT.. BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IT
REMINDS
ME OF...WHEN THEY SHOW ALL THAT GREAT PROMISE OF POWER AT A WALK AND THEN AT
A TROT , THEY CONFIRM IT...
IT IS RARELY SEEN TODAY...BECAUSE THE REQUIREMENT FOR IT BY THE JUDGES,
STOPPED...DUE IN MUCH PART TO THE AKC'S EXCESSIVE GAITING REGULATIONS...
AND THE CHANGE IN THE MOVEMENT TO EXCESSIVE SPEED..FOR A MUCH SHORTER TIME
PERIOD.. SUCH PERFORMANCES , ALWAYS MAKE ME THINK OF THAT OLD JOKE...

' IF YOU CAN'T BAFFLE THEM WITH YOUR BALONEY...THEN DAZZLE THEM WITH YOUR
FOOTWORK." BARB WILLIAMS
