"Unnecessary handling by the judge is poor practice. There is no reason,
other than unsureness by the judge, for bouncing the animal's back like a
mattress inspector, pulling the tail up or down, poking here and there as
though frisking the dog for dangerous weapons, or any of the other
ridiculous actions sometimes indulged in by judges...Other than in the
evaluation of teeth and testicles, the dog need not be touched. All other
faults or virtues of a Shepherd can be readily seen by the trained eye when
the dog is posed naturally at the end of a loose leash and when gaited."

One interesting observation that I've made - most specialty judges do not
put their hands on the dog at all other than to check teeth and testies.
Seems they rely almost entirely on what their eyes are telling them. All
breed judges on the other hand, use their hands much more...I assume because
the small ring and inability to move dogs for extended periods of time
forces them to rely primarily on touch. :o)

Ah Jeff, that is where experience comes in. When some one has watched and
studied

a breed (e.g. breeder/exhibitor/serious student/judge)for a number of years,
you know what will

happen in any size ring. Your judgement is not based entirely on the
movement...that's is where

"hands on" comes to play. Your eyes and hands will tell you many things you
need to know about this dog.

Is his front well under him?

Is the shoulder laid on correctly?

Is the upper arm of equal length and of correct angle?

Too much angle at the pastern and splayed feet?

Is there too much slope to the pelvis and is the tail set

to low (incorrect angle to the croup)?

Does the topline flow in smooth curves?

This is pretty much done at a glance as the dogs are being set up

and then later during the individual exam.

Watching an animal move should just confirm what your hands and

eyes have told you. If the structure is there and the animal is

"well conditioned", the movement will be there.

BTW, I have noticed of late that in the specialties, the ring often "cut"

when a dog is going around....????lack of training or poor doubling????

I just know that many are not using the entire ring.

Peggy, I don't know about from the center of the ring, but coming from
someone that has to show these animals to the best of my ability -?a small
ring does not showcase a good mover's attributes.? So, you may be able to
evaluate movement in any ring, but what you are seeing may not be the best
some animals have to offer because their movement is being distorted by
taking 2 steps turn, 2 steps turn and the handler having to control this
motion and guide them through 4 very quick corners.?? Do this at an inside
all breed on mats and you have even more complications.? > Jeff Pyle> >
