Well, that is very interesting. I was always skeptical of what was said as the
Reno KC has their show there every year and I couldn't figure out how a small
(compared to the GSDCA) all breed club could afford the site but the PC could
not.

One of our local members took this report to the Convention and Visitors
Authority representative in Reno, who was the account manager for this event.
He affirmed that this report was not accurate and that the costs for this
event were as originally reported to our Nationals chair and not as
represented in this memo.
Somewhere, along the way, this was changed, not by the convention authority.
FYI… Not sure how to discover the error and it is too far behind us to figure
it out. Our treasure at the time is no longer in office. Just saying… there
were possibly some need to redirect this event back to Purina other than the
actual cost of the event in Reno.

Subject: More Information About Reno
Some readers see this part of your email after the subject line in the inbox.

On behalf of the GSDCA Board of Directors, it appears that our difficult
decision to not move forward with the Reno location for our 2017 National
Event and move the 2017 National back to Purina needs more clarification.
The insurance and indemnity liability clauses required by the City of Reno
were unacceptable.
The continuous additional costs added by Reno were initially not discovered
or disclosed and became unreasonable.
The discussion at the July Board Meeting centered around the liability in the
license required by the City of Reno which included Insurance Liability and
Indemnity clauses that were unacceptable. The Club tried for months to get
Reno to make concessions which would be acceptable. Reno was unwilling to
negotiate.
A year ago when looking into numerous locations on the west coast, Reno was
the only financially viable location to offer a West Coast National for our
membership.
The original cost quoted to us for Reno was approximately $10,000 more than
Purina, which we were willing to endure to offer our National to the
membership on the West coast. However, when the venue started disclosing
additional licenses, fees, security, etc. and the additional need for a Show
Superintendent not necessary at Purina, we found ourselves comparing a total
facility cost of $14,300 for Purina to one of $61,000 for Reno. (Facility
rentals for all events, equipment, security, cost of fees and licenses, Show
Secretary and Show Superintendent. Not total cost of national Event).

With the National positively netting $49,000 in 2015 but the club still
losing $33,000, this board has a fiduciary responsibility to this membership
and club to make these very difficult, but thought-out, decisions.
Our commitment the last several years has been to reassess all expenses to
insure we leave this club financially strong for the future. We have also
implemented other significant cost cutting measures to get the GSDCA to at
least breakeven so we can begin to rebuild the net worth of this organization.
All 3 contractual positions have been renegotiated saving the club $22,000
annually beginning 2017.
BOD members approved a limited reimbursement for BOD meetings personally
covering some of the costs.
BOD revisiting the option of conference meetings for 1-2 of the meetings.
Futurity Committee made the commitment to look into current costs and this
board approved their suggestions to cut expenses while still keeping the
spirit of this program.
We have many great committee chairmen and members who recognize this
financial challenge and are committed to be aware of costs and share ideas
that will continue to make the difference.
Be assured that your Board of Directors is just as disappointed as you that
the Reno location did not work out for 2017. In the best interests of the
Club, we had to consider the unreasonable liabilities the Reno contract
placed on our club and the escalating costs being added.
If a location is found in the future where the true costs are similar to
Purina, this board will certainly reconsider recent decisions.
We hope this helps clarify why the difficult decision had to be made. Your
commitment to our GSD, our membership and our Club is sincerely appreciated.
