Yes, that's poppies, not puppies....
Six years ago today my husband and I had to decide to let our beautiful girl,
Misty, go on to the Rainbow Bridge. She had cancer, and on this day, she had
come home from work with Brien (she went to work with him every day of her
life, almost). She lay down on the grass on the way to the house, and looked
at
us. We knew, as people had advised us that when it was time, we would know.
We took her to the vet, dreading what was to come. It was, at once, the
easiest and hardest decision we ever had to make.
We both held her as her spirit left her and she was free again. Free to run,
and free to terrorize the squirrels she was on constant watch for. She was
12 1/2 when she left. Our pack leader, she left behind two males - Worth, who
howled incessantly as we also cried, and Bomber, who became upset because the
rest of us were.
My husband has a beautiful garden, and the following morning, there were
dozens of newly opened poppy flowers that had been closed the previous day. We
smiled at the flowers, we figured it was Misty letting us know everything was
OK. Especially since we buy the little cloth poppies the week of Memorial Day.
Every year, we take special care to note the progress of the flowers at this
time. I have no doubt that tomorrow morning, we will find open poppy flowers.
She now has "her" pack with her, Worth and Bomber have left us as well.
Misty was our first dog, and she set the course of my life. I joined a park
district obedience class because I'd never had a large dog. The rest of the
story pretty much tells itself.
I was already on the list at the time, and the private responses I received
from all of you helped me tremendously.
