/Unvaccinated dog from Stearns County/

Two days before its death, an unvaccinated dog in Stearns

County was having difficulty eating and closing its mouth.

The owner had previously lost an animal to tetanus, and

wondered if the dog was suffering from the same ailment.

The dog's disease progressed to the point that the owner

reported it to be acting 'crazy', walking in circles and

salivating. The dog tested positive for rabies on October 11.

The dog left behind seven puppies. There were two

other unvaccinated dogs on the property as well as a

number of steers, heifers and horses. Ten animals have

been euthanized due to exposure to the rabid dog and

an eleventh animal will likely be euthanized as well. The

Minnesota Department of Health's (MDH) investigation is

ongoing. So far, two people have been advised to receive

post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) do to their interactions

with the rabid dog. An additional 10 people have chosen to

receive PEP, though health officials have determined they

were not exposed.
