a) disposable income? what's that??? b) I don't show anymore, I ain't whining.. it's the club that whining, and calling us (that aren't into going broke anymore) poor sports cause their sacred club is dying.. c) I was offering a suggestion to those clubs to dig up a few extra funds.. Anyone that has been a member of a club knows the blood and sweat that goes into it.. what are the benefits? for some clubs, it is simply a matter of members paying a fee to go work themselves to death for barely even a thank you.. ----- Original Message ----- From: Pinehillgsds@xxxxxxx To: stormygsd@xxxxxxx ; edwinx@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ; showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: bbasu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2008 5:44 PM Subject: Re: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Millionaire Handlers - and fee for service But for the "hobbyist" myself included, showing dogs is just that, a hobby. Money goes out the door just as it does with any hobby or sport. I don't care if your interest are showing horse, sailing, racing dirt bikes, golf, etc., it's a HOBBY. You set a budget of "funny money" that's comfortable and don't expect to do anything BUT pay. And that's OK IF you can afford to do so and in this economy, it's also OK if you have better uses for your disposable income. Never have I heard so many people (and I don't mean on the list, I'm talking about John Q in general), worry out loud about how rough things are. Well then if things are rough, you tighten your belt. You cut back on extras. You turn the heat down a few degrees and wear woolly socks and a sweater. Getting back to dogs, IF THE ECONOMY IS TOUGH FOR YOU, pardon me for pointing this out, but now's NOT the time to be throwing good money after a couple of ribbons. Ribbons don't compound like money in a retirement account (or interest on a credit card!). The economy is awful and yet, the other day someone on this list was commenting/sort of joking she hoped her bitch finished quickly or she'd need a second (then she joked "third") mortgage. Well, I don't find the thought of borrowing money TO SHOW DOGS, a secured lien using your house as collateral WHILE home prices are falling no less, even remotely funny, but then again I was raised by a banker father who would wring my neck no matter how old I am if I was going into debt over dogs. I don't even want to THINK of the argument THAT would start... Do I expect handlers to cut their fees or kick back to a club like a vendor fee? Hell no. (Besides, I showed today, then I "did" the vendors. I "needed" vanilla raw hide bones, 2 stripping knives, 2 leashes, 2 collars...the vendors made out better than my handler I'm thinking, lol!) Several years ago there was talk at a National re handlers cutting their fee for puppies. Now, the reality is, the puppies are often the "wild child" of the bunch and frequently more work than a dog that's been out and about, so getting paid less while physically getting beat up and doing more work seems counter intuitive, but when I'm charged less for a puppy I greatly appreciate it. Puppies hold majors you know. I'm all for a free market. If a club doesn't have members to support it, let it fail. If you can't afford to show dogs, don't, but then please don't whine about it. (The Brits would call that "poor form" <G>.) Read the paper's business section. When there are some that struggle to feed families and losing their homes, when there are banks in danger of failing and the price of commodities is through the roof, whining about declining entries and the cost of showing dogs seems just plain silly. But I guess I do have a problem with paying and paying and paying and paying some more for the joy of going to shows and seeing dogs and seeing my own dogs in the ring.. the "hobbyists" seem to be running out of funds as entry fees increase to support clubs, travel expenses increase to support gas companies and airlines, handler fees increase to cover their fee and expenses.. then clubs come back to ask for that last dollar you were desperately hanging on to to buy a hot dog at lunch time with.... and people wonder why entries are down?? When vendors set up at shows to sell their wares, they pay a fee to the club.. why shouldn't handlers pay a fee to the clubs to the clubs as well when they are "selling their services"??? Just a thought that came to me from another hobbyist.. I think it is a very interesting question.. anyone want to respond?
