Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Microchip question
I have a question about the "roaming" of microchips - - -all my dogs are
microchips and have been for years.
I usually microchip about 5 months of age (or younger if the puppy leaves for a
pet home) but I had the
occasion to have someone at my kennel with a universal reader and they couldn't
get a reading on some of my dogs .
Due to the fact that there are several types of chips, not all readers can find
them. The "universal reader" is not real
dependable. I had Avid and they had their own scanners so I made sure I got
several of them. Indeed, I supplied
two Vet Clinics locally with a couple as well.
Has anyone else ever had that happen . . .?
Oh, they do "roam" -- as I know of a Bassett, a Dobie, and a couple GSDs as
well as an Afghan with them going
to chest, mid-back or a little higher on the neck.
Do you periodically check the microchips in your dogs to see if you can find
them?
What do you do if you can't find it - - -put in another chip??
Since the above mentioned dogs were not my own and mine all were OK as I DID
check every year or so.
If a dog got lost - and the chip has moved - how hard to AC people look for
chips??
The same question applies if something happened and someone else had to be able
to identify your dogs .
Very SAD to report that not ALL ACs have scanners. Also, if they do, they'll
not always check.
I know this one for a fact.
Since we are seeing so many emergency situations - and although I'm sure we all
microchip to keep the AKC happy :-)?
It seems that it would be important to know that if a dog got loose that we
could find/reclaim it by the microchip.
Thanks for all your thoughts
Yes, however it does seem like this is "only in our dreams". Sorry to ask a
question in answer to your question ---
BUT --- what do you mean by saying that we microchip "to keep AKC happy"? I
sure didn't do my chipping for
Mother AKC but for my own satisfaction; especially since I did not use the Home
Again chips. She had nothing to do
with my decision to chip my kids?
