The original concept was two fold...one, to show off what a  breeder'd  
bred, and that it was better than what the "other guy"  had bred.   
Two, to allow other owners/ breeders to see what was out  there and  
(hopefully) available so breeding stock could be improved.
And yes, it was competitive, but in a gentlemanly way,..and yes,  it  
was a social outing.

The original purposes may have gone by the wayside, which is  probably  
why quality isn't as high or deep as it should be.  A dog  show is,  
today, definitely a social occasion...a place to visit  with people  
you may not see otherwise, and if you're lucky, a nice  day out in  
good weather with people of similar interests.

However...the judge should NEVER, EVER, be aware of the time and   
costs spent for exhibitors to get there.  That sounds like an Old   
English Sheepdog exhibitor who told me once her breed should be  given  
extra consideration because of the amount of grooming  involved.  I  
told her "get another breed."
    The judge is supposed to be there to find what, in his or her   
opinion, are the best dogs.  He can make mistakes (and often does),   
he can indulge his own personal tastes (and often does), but he   
should NEVER consider how much time and money went into getting a  dog  
to the show, or anything at all other than the dogs presented  on the  
day.  It may not make him popular, but that is the job.  The  only job.
