Dear List members:
I just got home from Robert Scholes Memorial Service held in Kent, WA this
afternoon. It was lovely and a real tribute to Robert for those of you who
knew him and couldn't attend. Speaker after speaker gave moving tributes to
Robert amid laughter and tears, and Donna read from many of the letters sent
by German Shepherd Dog fanciers who expressed thanks for Bob's work. There
was a large display of Robert's memorabilia from over the years including
many pictures of his past GSD champions and Sel. Ch. Andretti ROM, along
with his prize Herefords. We saw the farm boy from Spencer, Iowa, with the
4-H and FFA credentials to prove his roots in animal husbandry, including
one picture of Robert as a proud teen showing his prize cattle even then.
The degree with honors in Philosophy from UCLA was there as well. I read of
his harrowing 5 year stint in the Marines, serving as part of a 2,000 man
force exposed to life threatening levels of radiation duing cold-war nuclear
testing. He was one of the last, if not the last, to die of the Marines
that faced a near certain death sentence from radiation poisoning and the
cancers it caused.
A nice crowd came out, including Donna Sater, Robert's 25 year old son,
Stewart W. Scholes, along with his mother, Judy; his 23 year old
step-daughter, Jamie Tomlinson, and her mother, Holly Tomlinson, along with
Jim and Edie Hall, Bud Drew, Syd Mailberg, the Drosdicks, Alice Likens,
Kerry Southern, Juanita Williamson and a number of other friends from the
German Shepherd Dog Club of Washington State, a lovely German Shepherd
(didn't catch her name), and a contingent of cattle ranching friends.
It was good to be there among friends, as we said good-bye and shared fond
memories of Robert in a way he would have loved
