Mediocre champions...interesting oxymoron. Sorta like "giant shrimp". I
think it begs the question; mediocre compared to what? A nationals quality dog
is
definitely a superior animal, and probably relatively rare, compared to the
considerable number of German shepherds that make up the base (so to speak) of
our breed. How many of us are blessed with such animals? Such luminous and
blinding stars? Not many. The rest of us struggle in lower atmospheres, doing
the best we can, usually with decent dogs, unknown handlers, and very little
money. The "pillars" of the breed play and mingle among each other...the rest
of us can only watch in awe and envy. When we (the great underclass) have a
decent Champion, it is probably somewhat "mediocre" compared to the great and
deserving stars in our breed. We support the shows, we place and win in
groups now and then, we are usually less extreme in movement, but manage to
earn
difficult titles in performance events in many venues, in addition to being a
champion in the breed, (proving in these venues our strength and
endurance.). I have a friend who has told me her beautiful champion is held in
contempt
by some of the performance (agility, etc) folks, who think getting a champion
title is frivolous, and not the venue of a true "working" dog. Amazing.
Seems no one can win....
Some of our 'mediocre' champions are actually the backbone of the
breed...for the rest of us. . Shalom, Syd
