Earlier today, just for the heck of it
I picked up an old Red Book (1979) to look at.
If you don't have a full set of Red Books, you
might want to work at collecting them.

Page 25: Handler Charts:
"These charts indicate that handlers indeed did win
the majority of classes at the 1979 Futurity/Maturity
shows. There has been much discussion throughout the
country in regards to handlers judging and handling
and judges also judging and exhibiting in close proximity
of each other as being a conflict of interest. In respect
to this the GSDCA Board has adopted the following
recommendations: The criteria for judging a Futurity
in any region will be that any judge who accepts a
judging assignment will not handle/exhibit at any
of the Futurities for that year, including the National
Futurity/Maturity finals. The GSDCA board requests that
any person judging a point show in conjunction with a
Futurity show should refrain from exhibiting a dog in
that Futurity show.
