Probably because of the stress of the flight/gelding:

I don't know about neutering as I've never had a stud dog that I've had to
do that to. But, I do know how disappointed my girl friend was when she
gelded her Andalusian stallion. He came off the jet from Spain with a
massive mane and tail... no denying that hair gene... he had it. He was
snorting and puffing and Shelly said...'what have I gotten myself into?'
haha Anyway, he was gelded and all that gorgeous mane and thick tail
disappeared. I on the other hand have an Andalusian mare with the hair
gene.
