Please read and crosspost the NAIA alert opposing Question 3, the
Greyhound Racing Ban on the November ballot in Massachusetts:

  The text reads:

Your Role in Defeating the Massachusetts Greyhound Racing Ban

  October 6, 2008

Animal rights activists in Massachusetts are gearing up to abolish
greyhound racing in a November 4 statewide referendum vote on Question
3, the Greyhound Protection Act . This is the third time the radicals
have targeted greyhound racing in Massachusetts; their 2000 campaign
was defeated by voters, and their 2004 effort was thrown out by the
  courts.

The current campaign against greyhound racing is being funded in large
measure by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). According
to the most recent spending reports, HSUS has donated at least
$250,000 to the effort so far, and will probably spend even more in
the final days of the campaign. HSUS has lent its full support to the
Committee to Protect the Dogs, formerly known as Grey2K USA, and they
believe the third times a charm in Massachusetts. We need to prove
  them wrong.

  The facts you should know

As usual, the animal rights campaign has relied on myth and
misinformation to create concern about the welfare of racing
greyhounds in Massachusetts. But here are the facts:

  * Massachusetts Racing Commission records show that a full 99.3
  percent of the greyhou
nds racing at Massachusetts tracks are either
adopted or returned to the farm as pets or breeders when they retire.

  * State records also show that the greyhound injury rate at
Massachusetts tracks is extremely low, with an injury rate of less
than one one-hundredth of one percent in over 465,000 startsâ"and most
of those injuries were minor enough to permit the greyhound to return
to racing or successfully transition to adoption.

  * There has not been a single case of greyhound mistreatment
prosecuted in Massachusetts since 1935; if violations of the law
occurred, they would be observed and prosecuted by the Massachusetts
State Police, who are located on-site at the tracks.

  * Kennel operators at tracks are subject to industry rules for
greyhound care, and those who violate the rules lose their racing
licenses and are banned from the sport for life.

  * Contrary to animal rights claims, greyhound racing has never
been banned in a state where it actually existed. In most cases where
the sport is prohibited, it is part of a larger state policy against
  pari-mutuel betting.

Why NAIA Trust opposes this initiative

There are many reasons to oppose this radical measure. Think for a
minute about what happens if Question 3 passes.

  * It will open the door to animal rights initiatives against
agriculture, biomedical research, commercial fishing and other animal
  enterprises in Massachusetts and elsewhere.

  * It will cost over 650 tra
ck employees their jobs in the middle
of the worst national economic crisis since the Great Depression.

  * It will cost Massachusetts state government and track cities
millions of dollars in tax revenues when the state is already facing a
$1.2 billion budget gap, according to the Center on Budget and Policy
  Priorities.

What you can do to help

We know that HSUS and other groups will pump hundreds of thousands of
dollars into high-visibility advertising from now until November 4.
But we have a secret weapon: you! Grass-roots organization is still
the best way to defeat bad policy measures. Here are some steps you
can take to help us defeat Question 3:

  * Encourage your family, friends and neighbors, and business
associates to vote ââ?¬Å?Noââ?¬Â? on Question 3.

  * Contact and mobilize other animal interest groups who share our
concern about an animal rights victory in Massachusetts.

  * Quickly send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper
opposing Question 3 using the NAIA Trust media link .

  * Call in to your favorite radio show when the talk turns
political to express your opposition to Question 3.

With your support, we have defeated other well-funded, heavily
advertised animal rights measures, most recently in California. Now
please help us do the same thing in Massachusetts by defeating
Question 3, the so-called Greyhound Protection Act.
