Laura,
You will become disillusioned quickly if you listen to what everyone says.
Remember these people are friends, but in the end are competing against each
other.
Form your own opinions.

I got my first dog from the BOB judge, and have known him and his wife for
many years. He is generally a stickler for temperament, but I was not there,
so do not know how he judged. I will also tell you although he does not own
any, he has nothing against a good sable, and gave several Select ratings.

If you are that easily disillusioned, this is probably not the right hobby
for you. It is very competitive, people can be nasty, and the judging can
be disappointing at times. For some the rewards are worth the effort -time,
expense, heartache.

But if you have a burning passion to get as close to that standard as you
possibly can,
and you love the breed so much nothing will stop you from achieving that,
AND the money to pay for all of it, this might be the hobby for you.

If not, just enjoy your dogs! After all, in the end, it is all about them
anyway!
:)

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Loose lead exam

I went to my first National, this year hoping to learn more and see some
beautiful dogs. I came home disillussioned.
The people I was with, some really nice and successful breeders, explained
about the temperament test that the judges were to use.
I think the 2 ladies did it sometimes and they tried at least.
The BOB judge never even came close to what I read about and seemed to
cover up temperament.
I thought all colors were fine according to the standard but I heard
people say he would not look at a sable but then they added except with the
right handler.
As a newbie, I am not sure I want to participate in conformation.
  Laura
