What surprised me in my litter, was that of the puppies that did NOT show
symptoms, one had just as bad ME (from looking at the xrays), and another had
WORSE ME than the puppy WITH symptoms (who is still alive and well at 11 yrs
old).

Good question, Hope. I am boarding a GSD right now for a friend....he's from a
litter of 3: Only one was regurgitating as a baby and was put down, but his
owner had all 3 x-rayed and the barium confirmed that all three had mega.
Now...this dog I am boarding has never shown one single clinical sign and is a
big, handsome, robust boy. I understand that the remaining littermate is also
free of symptoms. (Neither will be used for breeding; the breeder/owner is
VERY conscientious.)
So obviously there are degrees of megaesophagus....I wish some
scientific-vet-genius-type person would figure this out. Over the years, I
wonder how many dogs we have unwittingly bred to and from, thinking if there
were no signs they must be OK.
I'm hoping this boarding dog will be rexrayed to see if there has been
improvement since babyhood. Wouldn't it be interesting to find out if they can
actually outgrow it in mild cases?
