The Standard has it right.? I think we are all trying to define it, but you
can't.? Even my old rescue guy, who started out with a horrible life, had that
look at times.? After all he had been through, he was a GSD at heart.? He had
pride, nobility and?a presence.? He passed that on to the youngsters.? They
respected him and emulated him.? He is the reason I am in GSD's.? He overcame
so much previous abuse to become the most awesome dog.? He had the kindest eyes
and most intelligent eyes.? He was a therapy dog and trained all?my
youngsters.? He loved his visits and bonded with his patients.? He was so
gentle and sweet with them.? Yet, he took on bad guys without missing a beat.?
He would come to work with me as a mascot and caught 2 burglars during an
investigation before we could get the K9 unit deployed.? He wasn't trained?for
it, he just did it.? He was so jazzed and proud of himself.? That was a moment
with that "Look of Eagles" I will never forget.? It is so something yo
u know when you see it.

Yes, it is in the eyes but it is also in the carriage and the pride of the
dog.? It's the whole package.??It's not about being a predator.? It's?about the
overall demeanor.? Other animals have this, who are not predatory,?and I would
bet the?description of their Standards?are just as vague.? It is something you
just know is there. You can see it?but not?every animal has it.??
I don't believe this is something we should TRY to define.??It is something we
should continue to strive for in our breed.? JMHO

Before this gets out of hand, I thought I'd take another look at all our
standards to see what they say about "look of eagles". I even went into the
DSHV and went through its complete standard which says absolutely nothing
about 'looks of quality or nobility'. So while some may call it the look of
eagles and others may call it the looks of stallions in heat, the standard
calls for a "look of quality & nobility". To be truly honest, there aren't
any other animals out there that can compare - not eagles, not horses
(stunning as they may be), not humans. An intelligent, well bred GSD is
unmistakable - it's in the eyes.
"The ideal dog is stamped with a look of quality and nobility-difficult to
define, but unmistakable when present." - from the AKC website
"The Shepherd should be stamped with a look of quality and nobility,
difficult to define but unmistakable when present. The good German Shepherd
Dog never looks common." - from the CKC website.

actually they eat other birds and will kill their young if they refuse to
fly :0) But they get 90 percent of their food by scavenging on dead animals.
A vulture is also very aware of it's environment. Predator or prey, both pay
attention or become someone elses lunch. That is what I love about mother
nature. She is totally fair.

I have always thought it meant that the horse, or dog, was alert and
aware of its surroundings....that you couldn't "put one over on" the animal.
I still think that's what it means.
Eagles pay attention to their environment, and mind their own business.
They are predators only when they need food...they don't kill for sport, and
they don't bother other birds or animals otherwise, unless it is for their
own protection and that of their young. I think that is a great quality to
attribute to a German Shepherd Dog..
