I don't know LBPD's policy regarding deployment of their K-9's, except that the order to send the dog in has to be given by a Supervisor. And, we weren't there so we don't know if they used other options or if there were exigent circumstances that required immediate capture of the suspect. The incident and the tactics will be reviewed. If this was a case of poor judgement then the Department will do the right thing by disciplining the Supervisor that gave the order. At any rate, the handler is devestated and yes, he has lost his partner and a cood cop. Very sad. Yes, this was a Malinois, but does it really matter? Our breed is just as widely used in Law Enforcement and faces the same risks Ranger did.
