I have been outcrossing for quite a few years. Sel Ex Mechanical Bull and Sel
Ex Ch Good to the Last Drop are both double outcrosses. They are both related,
because Gilley's grandfather and Maxwell's grandmother were sisters. I am
linebreeding now between their progeny and maxwell's sisters after three
generations of outcrosses. I personally don't see any more problems either
way. There are some lines out there that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole
and many are running to them like lemmings.

Okay -
It's been awhile since I have had a nosy question.
I have been researching pedigrees as I have a young bitch and I like looking at
all the available boys. One thing I have discovered is that through the years
(starting with my 1964 GSD Review - thanks Bud!) is that inbreeding and
linebreeding HEAVILY on stud dogs is very common.
I found a ROM dog that went back to Lance 6 times in 5 generations (just an
example). He is not an exception to that rule.
Another interesting thing is that several of the very heavily used stud dogs
didn't live long lives. Does it not worry people a bit when a heavily used dog
lives to be 4 or 5 years or maybe even less?
Because the "Popular Stud Dog Syndrome" is so popular in GSDs, why do people do
it? Do you like the idea of winners? Do you actually like a certain look a stud
dog does? Do you actually figure out if Mr. Popular matches up with your bitch
appropriately?
The popular thing is common in all breeds and we have it in Dals, but nothing
like I have seen on GSD pedigrees.
And for you newbies or people with less then 10 years - why do you think you
should have a stud dog in your pedigrees 4/5 times without having ever seen the
dog up close? I see it time and time again in dogs - period... In dals some
new person will tell me that they want to line up on my old Rob dog.... Yeah,
great but you never saw him upclose - are you sure you want to do that?
