Not always. If you get a life sentence in California you can get out in 8
years. If it is without parole, then it changes. That is why some get ten life
sentences.
The case I just finished, where I did the civil side, the criminal court
gave him 135 years in state prison. It got reduced to 180 days, and then
reduced further to 78 days.
When he went in to begin his sentence he was diagnosed with cancer and given
six months to live. He died in 78 days.
It was for molesting his nieces over 10 years, some times as many as three
times a week from age 2 to age 11 when he lost interest.
I have mixed feelings about the short sentence.
