[ SHOWGSD-L ] Let's talk about Leptospirosis

Hey listers!
We recently took our two dogs in for their heartworm tests
and annual physical examinations (two separate
appointments on different days). And each time we were
there, we had the "Lepto" shot *heavily* pushed on us! I
found this striking since my vet (one of the owners of the
practice) made a point of only using combo vaccines that
didn't include the "L" in years past because of vaccine
reactions. But I guess now there are 2 new vaccines that
include the 4 most commonly seen serovars and which, at
least in the case of the new Duramune vaccine, are
supposed to be much, much safer.
Now mind you, I don't believe in giving yearly
vaccinations past the puppy series plus one additional
booster at a year old. Also, I do understand that vaccines
for bacterial diseases don't "act" like vaccines against
viral infections. But what's with the heavy push?
Especially since Leptospirosis can be treated effectively
using antibiotics, are there any advantages to vaccinating
with one of these new "low reaction" vaccines versus not
vaccinating at all? My dogs and I aren't doing any high
risk activities such as hiking or swimming in lakes. But
we DO have lots of wildlife in the area (and in our yard!)
including all the usual suspects: field mice, raccoons,
skunks plus the occasional rat.
Don't you hate it when your vet tries to throw the fear
of God into you?? What do you all do about vaccinating
against bacterial infections? Or not? :/
