The trait that defines the German Shepherd for me is Jack of All Trades.
This one phrase tells me that our breed must be mentally flexible, physically
capable and all around balanced to be able to turn to whatever direction their
people want to take them.
I abhor the idea of our breed being cut into sub-varieties, the agility
variety, the show variety, the "herding" variety. It's so unnecessary. Instead
of looking at the few points that are different, as breeders we should be
looking at all the points in common.
Whether we are breeding/competing in conformation, herding, schutzhund,
etc., we want a dog healthy/sound enough to do the job we ask, and live long
enough to reproduce.
We want them to be physically sound enough to stand up to the rigors of
the job.
We want drive and desire for competition in our dogs. A conformation dog
that plods around the ring, ain't gonna cut it. Obedience dogs need fire and
zip for the truly good scores. A herding dog with no fire, is a sad thing to
see.
And we all desperately want our competing dogs to have the smarts,
flexibility, and biddability to withstand training, traveling and showing.
A year ago yesterday, I was whelping a litter of 10 puppies. 4 are
currently training for agility, two are training for herding (one of these just
earned her HCT) several are training for the obedience/rally ring, one is going
into search and rescue, and one is in service training for a police K-9
department, one or two of the boys might be seen in the conformation ring,
we'll
see....and two go with their dads every day to work. I don't ever want to see
our
breed reach the point where all these people have to go to multiple litters to
find what they want.
