As others have said I believe we humans have created our own nightmare and
have to live with the consequences and it just plain sucks. We have done it
through our breeding practices, the food supply, vaccinations, chemicals
that pollute our environment, etc. etc. I am not quite as old as dirt
(getting there fast) but as I recall when pet food companies first started
making dog food, they used Beef. These companies used to run ads that THEIR
food had more beef than so and so's food. In later years, dogs started
developing allergies to Beef so the pet food companies started using poultry
products. What they didn't reveal was the dog's immune system had been told
through vaccinations that Beef was an enemy. (probably why they also
stopped coating puppy food with cow's milk products.) Please don't forget,
it was the pet food manufacturer's that started telling people not to feed
our dogs table scraps. Their message became widespread via veterinarians.
Dogs are a culmination of all the positive and negative influences of their
pedigree and the individual experiences of their lifetime. (vaccinations,
inherited vaccinosis, chemical flea treatments, lack of proper exercise,
poor diet, ad nauseum.) Some dogs are capable of handling a higher toxic
load than others and that may explain why some will live longer than others
even if they are fed crap diets. I personally am unwilling to play Russian
roulette with my dogs health given what I know about the health problems in
our breed.
