I posted this once but forgot the SUBJECT - sorry - I'm not sure if it will be a duplicate or not. I cannot understand what happened, it defies all I've ever learned about bloat w/torsion. My Kelly almost died last night. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Kelly had NOT eaten for hours. He had NOT been under any noticeable stress. The vet said the torsion happened SIX HOURS prior to surgery (he was in the hospital for TWO of those SIX hours). That means he was laying beside me while I was on the computer for over THREE hours, bloated with torsion and NOT <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />ONE SYMPTOM that I noticed. There was NO APPARENT PAIN. He vomited water once in the AM - I figured he drank too much or too fast. I heard his tummy gurgle a few times. Last evening when I was feeding the Hooligans, Kelly drank some water and vomited the dreaded WHITE FOAM a couple times which is my cue that there is a serious problem. I checked his gums and they were a tad slow refilling. I took a quick shower, got dressed, called the emergency clinic and we were on our way within twenty to thirty minutes of the first sign of white foam. He had a fever of just under 105. After the initial examination and x-rays, the vet felt he had been bloated w/torsion too long and his internal organs were dead. He started showing signs of pain after the x-rays were taken - whining a little. She showed me an area of the stomach that had already been destroyed. She suggested I have him put down. I asked her to open him up and visually inspect the damage, praying that it wasn't as bad as she suspected. I wanted to give him every possible chance to live. I signed the euthanasia form so they could put him down while he was still on the table if it was the worse case scenario. When I kissed him good-bye I knew I'd never see him again. I left feeling he had a zero chance of survival. Only the one area of his stomach was dead. She felt his spleen could be saved. She doesn't know how much damage was done to his heart or other organs but they looked good. She "invaginated" the dead part of the stomach. The stomach acid will destroy the dead tissue. She tacked his stomach. She said there's still a chance of peritonitis and other problems. She said he now has a 50/50 chance of survival. But right now he's alive and that's all I can ask for. When I spoke to the hospital this morning Kelly was alert, watching what was happening around him. He peed and pooped (diareaha). Of course he hasn't been offered food yet. He's still on his IV's with pain meds and antibiotics. Please keep him in your prayers!!! Gayle & the Hooligans!
