Hey Morgan. I finished my first champion in 1998. Have not finished the second
one yet and at the age of 60. It may be one and done. Good luck on number two.

RETIREMENT!! What is that??. @ 67 I have my 1st Show Dog (just completed hisÂ
Championship and doing a little extra), and another ready to hit the road. I
walk 1-3 miles daily with my new girl (2 1/2 y/0). "V" exspects to catch and
fetch 200 tennis balls daily. Building an exercise ring with tunnels, tetter,
jumps. Can not possibly retire, and who the hell really wants too??Â

I personally was not speaking about people that have paid their
dues and supported the Breed for years..in the ring...at the
shows, at the Club meetings...at the National...breeding,
grooming, driving, working, showing, helping, mentoring,
judging.Â
Those people are ICONS of the Breed including Helen herself.
STILL ARE. Some have retired for whatever reason but are still
very involved. We ALL will make that decision soon enough...
none of us will escape retiring. But...when we quit I want
to still know I spent years with the BEST Breed in the World
and was around people smart enough to know that!!Â

For those that only complain, criticize, expound on how bad
the Breed is compared to years ago...how bad the shows are..how
bad we are...and yet they have never been involved in Breeding,
showing, training, working in Clubs, working at shows, talked
dogs with other concerned Breeders until well into the night,
shared rides or transported someone's dog....helped another
Breeder or Exhibitor with a problem or whelping...nor mentored
anyone about the Standard and the greatness of a really good
German Shepherd Dog....well....THEIR LOSS in my opinion.

Addressing your comment, "those that have stopped showing," and those that
don't compete...etc. Some of those are our very best! Ed Barritt doesn't
lack for Judging Assignments,
Dave Rinke, and a large number don't compete regularly but are great
judges. Rita Sandell does a great job but there are many that do. I
think I do a great job and have judged 4 Nationals and been
elected to judge 5 Nationals. Circumstances and my age have me living
where I can no longer
"compete" but I am active as Chair of AOE, Award of Excellence, and attend
shows as much as
possible. Evan, I also so agree with you....dogs are the best they have
ever been. So many beautiful
dogs. They HAVE gotten better and sounder and more in compliance with our
standard. That is
because we also are holding judges accountable for putting up dogs that are
unsound! Bravo to the
ringside and the exhibitors. No more dogs knitting and pearling as they go
away....now we have
dogs that are single tracking with straight hocks....yeah!!! If the
exhibitors don't allow judges to "bend"
or do a bad job....they can't. Judges do not have to exhibit to be a good
judge....they have to have
years of experience and exhibit that they KNOW what they are doing. They
have to prove their
knowledge and that is done by the results and their winners PERIOD!
