This was just sent to me... I've received many emails from concerned people like Judy who have become alarmed by the latest email circulating the internet claiming that the HSUS is euthanizing animals instead of rescuing them. This is FALSE. Tremendous resources are being used to find and rescue the pets impacted by Katrina. Why someone would intentionally and maliciously seek to discredit an organization that is HELPING animals is a mystery to me. Perhaps it is because HSUS has written guidelines on the humane and proper manner to euthanize animals? Perhaps because a group out there is angry that HSUS is the primary agency handling rescue operations? Or maybe someone just doesn't have anything better to do than to create discord amidst the chaos that a historic tradgedy like Katrina already brings. I woudn't have a clue. IMO, every effort is being made to save pets. Many stays and shelter animals are also being picked up. In the process, numerous organizations across the U.S. are offering help and wanting to be involved. 99% are well-meaning. 1% are not. Just this week, some individuals appropriated HSUS tee-shirts and tried to take the parrots from one of the shelters claiming authorization. Some foster groups are unconcerned about the primary goal to reunite pets with owners. A cute toy poodle (owner identified) is currently mia. I'm naive. These things never crossed my mind but I guess there will always be those who seek to capitalize on the misfortune of others. I suspect we will see much more of this at every level. As for not being let in... In the beginning, no one had a clear plan. Then the state appointed an agency, LA-SPCA. This org, being small, called in the HSUS for help. Then we had to fight to get in. Then there were two zillion animals to get out. Then not enough room. Did it go smoothly? No. Were all resources untilized? No. Is it better today. Yes. Not everyone one can participate in rescue work. It requires special training, coordination, and teamwork. Heck, in the begining, I was ready to find some galoshes, and drive down to the city with a crate and leash. Someone like me would get in the way, hurt themselves, and delay the process. Rescuers are RISKING THEIR LIVES as I write this getting animals out. HSUS and MANY other agencies (including Fire fighters, National Guardsmen, and the recently maligned Police) are the reason why. As for a response from HSUS, frankly they are too busy to refute every little bit of myth that is put out. They are rescuing, washing, cleaning, feeding, transporting, medicating, walking... well you get the picture. I regret posting this but am tired of hearing that good people are being mislead by some disgruntled individual or group using the internet as their tool. The author of these emails is no friend to animals. So please pause and consider the validity the stuff that we all receive everyday. Rely on credible sources. Thank you all for your sincere concerns. I hope I've addressed this adequately. veni Cathleen Bennett _www.crossroadsgsd.com_ (http://www.crossroadsgsd.com/) We have puppies ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2005.
