Katrina animals await owners
Foster homes still needed for homeless dogs and cats

As the doors to the warehouse serving as the shelter of the Katrina Animal
Disaster Team open, Joshua, an 8-year-old German shepherd, lifts his head and
his tail begins to wag. Soon, Joshua is on all paws, seemingly desperate to
catch the eye of anyone who walks past his crate.
Joshua is one of 18 dogs and nine cats brought into the Corpus Christi shelter
from hurricane-ravaged Louisiana.
Though Joshua is underweight and has a minor skin condition that has caused his
fur to be patchy in some areas, his attitude seems to be untouched by the
trauma he experienced more than a month ago, said Cheryl Martinez, coordinator
for the Katrina Animal Disaster Team.
Joshua was rescued from the flooded streets of Louisiana and taken to temporary
shelter in Mississippi. There, the docile dog became a target for aggressive
animals.
"He was getting beat up by the other dogs at the shelter," Martinez said.
Despite the rough treatment, Joshua's gentle spirit remains intact.
"He's got a totally sweet German shepherd temperament," Martinez said. "He's a
good people dog."
Joshua and the rest of the animals at the warehouse are under the care of
veterinarians and will be sterilized and checked for heartworms, Martinez said.
Use of the warehouse was donated by a local businessman, but the animal
organization is seeking donations to cover the veterinary costs.
While homes have been found for some of the dogs and cats, Joshua and several
of his kennel mates have not. Eleven dogs and five cats still need foster
homes.
The next step for Joshua, Martinez said, is to find him a foster home, continue
to treat his skin condition with medicated shampoo and put his photo and
information on Petfinder.com so that his former owners can locate him.
If no one comes forward in about 30 days, he will be placed up for adoption.
Though Martinez has worked with rescued pets before, she says the dogs and cats
of Katrina have stolen her heart like no others.
"With all they've been through, their attitudes are so sweet," Martinez said.
