I do not know about Goldens but I can tell you GSD's do go through some
strange phases.....usually when hormones start to kick in....in both dogs
and bitches....A perfectly sound animal can become unsure of themselves and
not be too sure they want a stranger touching them.....you can see it at
times in puppy classes...these dogs are not spooks.....they were fine last
week and will be great again....but leaving them home away from people is
not the answer. A GSD is smart and if they think they can act goofy and get
away with it they will....and they will continue to do so. There has been
many a good dog ruined by an owner that did not think it important to
socialize a dog ...or put the dog away until it gets better....If the dog
is not exposed to all types of situations it can never recover from these
problems...I am not telling you to take a dog out to a shooting range(but a
sound dog should be able to go there)...I am telling you to take the dog
places where there are other dogs and people.....and that may be a dog show
where they are not entered , but can walk around and build confidence...also
dog classes.

So I have a question - and it is something we ponder in dals pretty often as
they also have the "phases" they go through, especially teenage girls..
BUT... The problem is, shouldn't we be breeding for phase free dogs? Dogs
who are sound emotionally throughout their lives?
The biggest issue I have found is that sound dogs who go through phases,
then have owners who make excuses for the dogs acting up. Rather than being
smart and letting the dogs stay home and grow out of this phase, they
continually subject the dog and the dog has it ingrained in their heads that
this is how they should act.
So as a breeder, aren't we better off not having phases? More often then
not, we have bitten the bullet and put nice pups in pet homes because of
phases - now we have very, very little of that in our line of dogs.
I never expect a GSD to be a Golden Retriever, but he should be sound in
mind..
JMHO.... Something to make people think..
