I don't think anyone can be sure what they're seeing in a photo, even one that has not been retouched. Still, it's a good way to compare dogs and learn to look...if one collects a lot of pictures of dogs in motion one can start to see what parts work, what ones don't, etc. Even stacked photos are useful to learn from. I don't think anyone should pick a stud dog that way, but people do...personally I don't think it's any worse than picking a dog as the sire of your next litter because it won a few times, OR because your handler told you to do it...unless you are so thick you can't move without your handler.
