Much has been written about Judge White¹s ring procedure of late, and a
number of exhibitors pulled their entries Sunday in Denver in protest. I
considered doing so, but didn¹t. My dog did not place Sunday .
I have to say that I thought Judge White was considerate to both dogs and
handlers. As far as I could see, he tested every dog¹s temperament, though
not in the manner prescribed by the PC. He approached, extended his hands
for the dog to sniff; he examined the teeth gently; he checked testicles
from under the belly, which some consider a gentler approach than from the
rear, and throughout the examination, he briefly petted each dog or
scratched it under the chin. I saw nothing intended to intimidate the dogs
? and the dogs seemed perfectly comfortable with him ? lots of wagging
tails.
I¹ve seen MANY judges who handled the dogs more roughly.
As one would expect in an all-breed, the ring was small, and some classes
had large entries. Judge White split the entries and sent half of them
outside the ring to provide more showing room for the other half. Then he
reversed the procedure. This certainly worked to the advantage of the
exhibitors.
I didn¹t always agree with his placements, but . . . that¹s what makes dog
shows. <G>
I neither dispute nor disparage the first-hand comments made by other
listers, nor do I mean any disrespect to those who decided not to show under
Judge White. I simply feel the need to report what I saw.
