A few weeks ago I attended a meeting for the Larimer County Ag Advisory Board
and one of the speakers of the day was Matt Makin, a meteorologist for one of
the local TV stations and he was there to discuss weather apps to aid farmers &
ranchers in making better decisions based on weather information. At the end of
the presentation he left us with the foreboding prediction that we were in for
a
sudden change in the weather within the next few weeks and with it Summer will
be gone and Winter here to stay for the next several months......
What does that have to do with showing GSD's..... mainly that this last weekend
was the Arapahoe Kennel Club's annual show and one of the last that offers
outdoor rings on the grass. Of course showing GSD's anytime of the year and
anywhere generally means that we will have an 8 AM ring time. In the middle of
July, that is a blessing. We get up with the sun at 5 am and zoom to the show
site to have all the hairs in their appropriate places and ready to walk into
the ring first thing. In September/October - it is still very dark at 5 am...
reminiscent of the middle of the night, and standing outside next to the ring
at
7:50 with temps hovering in the upper 40's - brain and finger numbing. This
weekend, we persevered. With cups of hot coffee to keep the circulation going
in
my fingers, I showed (owner-handled) Mar Haven's Evangelina of Terra Norte'
"Lena" to judge Marjorie Tuff on Saturday to go Winner's Bitch and Best of
Opposite Sex which secured the final point necessary for
Lena to achieve her AKC Championship (with 3 majors, all owner handled).
On Sunday - same scenario with help from valiant assistants Bethanie O"Brien
and
Bailey Bremner, we were victorious again. Debuting Lena as a Special - she was
picked as Best of Breed by Al Biachi making the frozen fingers worth it. I love
showing outside in a grass covered ring.... but it is icing on the cake when
you
leave with the purple and gold rosette!
Special thanks to Carolyn Martello for entrusting her beautiful 3 month old
puppy to me and being a wonderful supportive co-owner. Lena is a CH Mar Haven's
Last Cowboy Song, HSAs daughter out of Mar Haven's Denali. Next we will have to
show the world that she is a herding dog too.
And all of this none too soon, yesterday afternoon - the temperatures dropped,
the cold wind started to howl and this morning there are snow caps on the Front
Range mountains to be seen by those watching the Bronco vs Raider game tonight
nationally on Monday Night Football. Matt and the woolly caterpillars were
right.
