Hi Chris;
At one point the Board was ready to release the White GSD's to
separate and AKC was waiting for the final letter from the Parent
Club. For some reason the Board did not follow through...?
There NEVER was an outcry or demand from the GSDCA members to
go back and re-do the DQ. NEVER. Therefore...It did not need to
"addressed". There surely are difficult major issues that the
Board does have to deal with....but THIS is what we watching now.

** The actual request to the Board is pasted below.
** THIS is the action that should have been addressed!

Subject:The White Shepherd Club

It is the American White Shepherd Association (AWSA) that seeks to establish
the White Shepherd as a distinct breed within AKC. It is AWSA that is seeking
a letter, as requested by AKC Foundation Stock Service Program (FSS)from the
GSDCA that it will not object to the establishment of the White Shepherd
(White Swiss Shepherd/Berger Blanc Suisse) as a new breed within the AKC FSS.

It was AWSA who distributed a petition to the GSDCA membership, receiving 368
signatures, requesting that the GSDCA Board draft a letter to the AKC stating
that the GSDCA would not object to the establishment of the White Shepherd as
a new breed within the AKC FSS program.
It was AWSA, who presented the petition to the GSDCA Board, and who received a
vote from the GSDCA Board to draft the letter to the AKC, only to have the vote
rescinded by an emergency Board meeting.
It was AWSA who requested the GSDCA Board to bring this item to a membership
Vote, only to have the board decide to not entertain the petition.
(keep in mind, this was more than enough signatures to have an item brought to
a membership vote if the subject of the petition was in regard to a standard
change or a change to the by-laws.
Any other subject at the discretion of the board if it chooses to entertain
the petition or not)
It was AWSA, at the request of the GSDCA Board, who contacted the SV to ask for
their opinion regarding the GSDCA drafting a letter to the AKC regarding the
establishment of the White Shepherd as a distinct breed within the AKC.
It was AWSA who received the response from the SV, stating:

*"Given the above facts, we therefore see no reason that would speak against
the introduction of the race, "White Swiss Shepherd/Berger Blanc Suisse"
in the AKC."

It was AWSA who requested the GSDCA Board, as stewards of the AKC GSD breed,
to object to AKC registering imported Berger Blanc Suisse dogs as AKC
German Shepherd Dogs. How can the GSDCA allow dogs of a different FCI breed
to be registered as German Shepherd Dogs?

It was AWSA who contacted the GSDCA to request a correction to the January 2012
Board meeting minutes to include the omission of this request to the Board.
It is AWSA who will continue to seek breed recognition for the White Shepherd
(White Swiss Shepherd/Berger Blanc Suisse) within the AKC.
As a member of both the GSDCA and AWSA, I ask all of you two things.

1. Why will the GSDCA Board not permit the membership to vote on the separate
issue of not objectingto the establishment of the White Shepherd
(White Swiss Shepherd/Berger Blanc Suisse) as a distinct breed within the AKC
FSS?
2. Does it not bother you that dogs of a different breed are being permitted to
be registered as AKC German Shepherd Dogs?

Thank you,
Melanie Fuellgraf

( AKC letter below! ) ( note: NO changes to our Standard! )

The following points have been approved as the basis for establishing the new
breed of White Shepherd or Berger Blanc Suisse here in the United States.
        1. The GSDCA should write a letter stating that they would not protest
the
AKC establishing the White Shepherd as a separate breed with the Foundation
Stock Service program.
        1. The GSDCA would not need to change their breed standard in any way.
The color white would remain a disqualification to the GSD breed.

        1. After this letter is submitted “ the White Shepherd Parent Club
(AWSA), the AKC and the GSDCA (if they so desire) would be responsible for
setting the guidelines in establishing the new breed.

Logistics could be:

        1. Name
        2. All registry requirements
        3. The possibility of the white coated GSD that is three generations
white/white,
and if the owner so desires, to be registered with the new breed.
        4. The possibility if there are owners who wish to remain in the GSD
breed with
their white coated dogs, it could be permissible for them to do so.

If at any point, the GSDCA would like to contact me personally.
I would be more than happy to discuss these points with them.

Sincerely,

James Crowley
AKC Secretary

secret

Obviously I can't speak for any of the board members, but just from a personal
observation, I think the "white" issue did need to be addressed. Each and
every year one of the "white" factions (I know I will be corrected but I
believe there are at least two, one that wants separation, the other wants
inclusion) would send a representative to at least one if not more board
meetings to ask for whatever their cause. One was for the GSDCA not to deny a
letter authorizing them into entry of the Foundation Stock registry for the
Berger Blanc Swiss
....
Now, in fairness to the board, we, the members, keep saying we want inclusion
in decision makings and a vote. So that is what has happened, unfortunately,
like in regular politics and law etc, the "pork" ie long coat issue was lumped
into this entire Standard change situation. Too bad, it should have been
handled as the white issue only, leave the long coat issue alone, there was
really no need to throw that into the mix.

That is my observation, I could be totally wrong (and probably am) but I do
think we have several dedicated board members that are really trying to listen
to the membership and allow their voices to be heard. So at times, it looks
like they are dammed if they do, and dammed if they don't.
I, as many others, don't think this will pass, but at least we did have a vote
in this, instead of the board just ignoring a long term issue that was not
going away.
As always, just my opinion. :)
