You, sir, have never been to a "spit barn" then. After a race, horses that
finish in the money as well as any who do not, in the opinion of the
stewards, run up to their expected performance, are taken directly to a(track
owned,
not their home base) barn by their groom followed by security. Here the
horses are bathed and walked, every step watched by track personnel. They are
provided water to drink until they pee into a cup on the end of a long stick.
(How would you like that job <G>?) The urine is then divided into samples,
placed in vials and sealed, by the track veterinarian and his as well as the
horse's groom's initials are placed on tape that covers the seals of all of
the samples. Blood may also be drawn at the request of the stewards. Blood
can be frozen and tested at a later date as new tests for foreign substances
become available. How sensitive are the various tests? They will pick up if
the horse had eaten cough drops (hey, they like them!) or chocolate
(caffeine).
The tests are so sensitive that after safety, they are a primary reason to
hire a night watchman for the shed row, to be sure YOUR horse isn't given a
foreign substance by another. Baseball could take lessons <G>.
BTW, the same process is repeated when you pay a vet to do a pre purchase
exam. You don't want to buy what you perceive is a sound horse only to find
later that they had a little help:)
