The Cornish crosses I had walked, pecked, ate, chased bugs, and did everything
you would expect chickens to do. And they grew fast.
And when I kept one of the boys, he had no trouble fertilizing the Rhode Island
and Barred Rock hens I had who raised several batches of chicks. Once mature he
was no more docile than any other "cock of the walk" - in fact, as he was
larger than the RI rooster I had, he encouraged the RI to leave. The problem
with using f1 hybreds for breeding is that you will not know what traits they
will pass on, not that they are not capable. But he and his offspring were
quite definitely able to forage and were physically fit.
Since my Cornish did range they took a couple of weeks longer to get to fryer
size than the Foster Farms factory farmed birds.
This does not mean that there is no truth in what was posted, but it is a
reminder that it is always good to look at the bias of the person doing the
posting. And yes, commercial poultry places are among some of the least humane
facilities in our food system. While you are at it, there are lots of reports
on the less than humane conditions poultry processing plant employees endure --
