Welllll....I have this problem.  With brevity.  <BG>
    Technically speaking, "Type" is the common characteristics shared by the 
breed as described in the Standard.
    BUT....you can't really educate the would-be judge without going into the 
subject of  "Style".  When I was a speaker at an all-breed seminar, I took 
two of my own dogs who were very different in style for comparison and 
critique. 
 At the end of it all, I think they "got it" much more easily than if I had 
tried to explain it.
     Am I going ring-around-the-rosy here?  What few words are you looking 
for?  Time to tell us.  <G>
