As a small breeder myself, I find that I don't have show homes when I'm ready to place puppies so some show pups do end up going into pet homes. The buyer, including many on these lists would do well to look at smaller breeders when searching for a show prospect. However, there also might be some perks when buying from a bigger name breeder. Advice and mentoring are a couple of things that a novice exhibitor might be giving up when buying from a small breeder. Also, replacement of a puppy will happen quicker if things don't work out. There is also a little community of other exhibotors that have dogs from this same breeder, which you would be a part of....shoot you might even get a chair under one of those EZY ups if you connect with the right group of people. It behooves the buyer to be educated or bring knowledgable people with when looking at puppies, as many small breeders are small for a reason. Their "eye" isn't quite as good as the bigger breeder and they offer many pet puppies as show prospects. Different then a big breeder deliberatly selling a pet as a show prospect which I don't think happens all that much. Why would they want their name on a poor quality dog. Cindy "Becky T. As these things often do, the conversation turned to how hard it is for the smaller breeder (who doesn't have the big name) to find show homes. Many lamented placing really good quality pups in pet homes because they try to stay small (and not keep more than 15 dogs) and wanted the pups to have good homes, rather than waiting until they are 8 months or a year old in hopes of finding a show home and run the risk of not finding a good pet home because the dog is older. Some people said they were tired of the so-called "big name" kennels selling pets as show prospects, while they sold their super show puppies to pet homes. What do you all think? How do you find show homes? And do you face similar problems in your area? ?Becky T.
