Amy, you don't have to wait to be asked. You know the all breed clubs
in your area...just send them a list of the judges you'd like to
see...it's easy to find out which specialty judges do more than just the
one breed....if they do a group or two, let the ab club know. Tell them
if they can use one of those judges, your club will
support...........and then, if the club DOES hire a judge from your
list, DO support the show...give a trophy or two, sure, but the main
thing is to bring the entry!
The problem as I see it is that even when clubs DO bring specialty
judges, the entry doesn't come, thereby justifying the extra
expense...that's why the ab club would prefer a judge who can do more
than the one breed. Also, by the time the ab club can use someone off
your list, that person may have ticked someone off, or fallen from favor
in another way, and the specialty club won't turn out, anyway. You have
to keep in mind that the all breed clubs hire far in advance, most of the
time...sometimes up to 2 years away..........I know I have assignments
on the 2007 calendar that have been there for almost 2 years......and I
have assignments now for 2008.
When you couple that with specialty clubs that often hire on fairly
short notice (to judges of multiple breeds it seems like short notice,
anyway) and then say "don't judge the breed for 4 months before our show
within 500 miles or whatever" that makes it hard, too........
Still, back in the 60s, if an all breed club used a specialist
judge, the turnout was fantastic............you could see 80+ one day
and 18 the next...the ab clubs got the message. Then all of a sudden,
the specialists didn't want to judge at the all breeds...........no
matter the size of the ring or anything else...there is a stigma
attached to the all breed shows, and it keeps showing up on this list,
whereas the rest of the dog world just thinks we are all
crazy..........there are MANY breeds that only really draw a huge entry
at ab shows when there is a specialist judge--the GSDs just don't show up.
