CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. —

The Clayton County police dog who was abruptly retired following a
serious accident on Monday along with his partner, Officer Travis Fox,
looks like he may make a full recovery.

The Clayton County police officer who was seriously injured after
crashing while responding to a home invasion is home from the
hospital. Lakota, a five-year-old German Shepherd received extensive
injuries and is being treated at the UGA vet school. Originally, it
was feared that he may lose a leg, but Dr. Scott Rose tells WSB he is
doing much better.

"He's definitely gonna be a great pet and certainly if he has a great
recovery, he certainly could do all the sorts of things he did
before," said Rose.

Travis' wife Corey, tells WSB when the department announced Lakota, a
five-year-old German Shepherd, was being retired and relieved of his
duties, her husband immediately stepped in and adopted the dog.

"He's part of our family. I mean, I love him. I just want him home,
I want him well. So, whatever we have to do to keep him here, keep him
well, that's what we're going to do. He's one of our children," said
Fox.

Lakota's police days may also not be over.

"I think he can probably actually turn to full service if he does a
good job with his recovery," said Rose.

Donations can be made to the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine's
GRACE Fund, a canine emergency fund.
