Listers, Stormy & Paulette --- I flew many dogs through the years. As Paulette says, "Northwest" has always been superb. I've also used and very much recommended "Delta" for flying dogs and other critters as well. Well, Folks -- just this week the "merger" of these 2 airlines is definite! What will happen is - Northwest will be phased out and their facilities & planes & equipment will be redone in the Delta colors etc. I've been a bit concerned as the only credit card I have is a VISA of the Northwest premium perks -- I have some accumulated free miles and I'm going to write to see if they'll be honored by the new company. One thing so very good about Northwest was that they would have a special multiple copy ticket on the crate & one of those would be removed as the crate was loaded on your flight and the Steward/ess would bring it to your seat. I have had problems fixed very helpfully with lost crates a couple of times. If they hadn't had this type of service, I'd not have know my pet was lost!! Why one time we were actually on the runway and they STOPPED the plane and all passengers were watching them arrive with my crate before take off. It was really special service IMHO! Right now, I think traveling with or shipping our dogs is getting tougher and tougher by air. But it appears that some customs agents are only releasing dogs to "brokers." *********************************************************************************************************************** Not true. I recently imported a young pup from Hungary. I did *not* have to use a broker. The pup came into Detroit and then on to Raleigh. The pup could have been cleared in either Detroit or Raleigh by me or a person I *authorized* to act as my agent. They won't release an imported animal to just anyone. However, the person acting as the owner's agent of record does *not* have to be a broker. It can be a friend who has been given "power of attorney" to act on behalf of the owner re. the clearance process. It is sometimes easier to use a broker, but it is *not* a mandate. Sounds like some "deals" have been made under the table or it's just a matter of miscommunication. Stormy, if you do find an *official* source which mandates that an imported animal can only be released to a broker, I definitely want to hear about it. Re. the importation of young pups... Puppies too young to receive the Rabies vaccination must be quarantined until they are old enough to be vaccinated. Then, they must remained quarantined for one month after the vaccination. The owner, or a person *authorized* to act as the owner's agent, must sign an official form stating that the puppy will be quarantined. The puppy can be quarantined on the owner's property. BTW, I know a customs broker who has worked all over the US and handles the importation of dogs, horses, monkeys, etc. She told me that Atlanta is one of the worst places to fly in an animal. Detroit is one of the best. Also, Northwest Airlines is, overall, the best carrier for shipping animals. ( She has dwelt with all the airlines for years.) I used Northwest to import the Hungarian pup and, after 3 days of travel, he arrived in perfect condition. Of course, there are always exceptions. The broker has plenty of horror stories... I'm just paraphrasing what I'm seeing on pet-law. If I find an official source, I'll send it on. But it appears that some customs agents are only releasing dogs to "brokers." One person was called and was asked if she planned on breeding her import, when she said maybe, they refused to release it. She went through hoops and "brokers" to get the dog. Another was returning a CH dog into the states from Canada, and was told that he had to have a "broker" to pick it up until he could prove the dog was his. Another person went to pick up a dog from Italy and the agent said the person was a commercial breeder (wasn't), but wouldn't release the dog until she got a broker. Most of these appear to have originated at the Atlanta airport. Does anybody have any more information? Thanks *~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^*~^* http://www.FairhopeGSD.com Dogs love is different.
