Hi Fred,
I did make a suggestion and would like to add something in addition to that
initial suggestion.
1) First suggestion was to gather our more knowledgeable people in a "Review
Committee" they would view what had been accomplished to date,& make their
collective recommendations to the Board as one voice.
2) There are several dogs from the 70's 80's 90's that could still win top
awards today - clearly not all - but then again, there are some today that
cannot win top awards due to incorrect structure
3) Use dogs for the IS that are no longer here. There are beautiful posed
pictures of dogs such as GV Mannix that are as stylish as our better dogs of
today
4) In my view is does help tremendously to show drawings of what is incorrect
as compared to what is correct. Let us take ears for example, correct upright
ears placed on top of the head to give the right planes. Then we have examples
of ears that are set too low on the head, are turned in or bonneted over the
head etc.
5) Another example; follow through. Show correct clean follow through. Then
examples of the hock locked or not open, and not only that, how about the hock
that is open but one can still see the lower thigh curved instead of straight
out. Then there is the kick up too high in the rear.
6) I am for taking the standard word for word and then DEMONSTRATING by
drawings what that standard actually means especially when it comes to motion.
7) It is a big undertaking however, it can be done and done as a wonderful
educational tool.
If we are not going to do it effectively, as a great educational tool, then
best not be hasty and fall short of the goal. After all,the purpose is to
represent the Shepherd in picture and word (the standard as written) as a
source for anyone wanting to know or learn about the breed is it not? Good is
not good enough, only excellence is good enough, the final, finished project
will speak volumes about our breed - it must be "right on"
