Ahhhh once again the purebred dog comes under fire. Let's face it....at the
level of the IIditorad the mushers are looking for super athletes...promoting a
breed type is irrelevant. The original dogs that ran the Iditorad were
purebred Siberian Huskys which were and are bred for endurance...not speed.
It is also one of the healthiest purebred dogs out there with lifespans upwards
of 15 years old. The Iditarod is a manmade event....the winners get tens of
thousands of dollars in prize money and endorsements and winning is
everything.....these mushers would breed to a cheetah if it was genetically
possible...This isn't a criticism of them.....they have a goal...and they are
doing whatever it takes to meet that goal. Promoting a certain "type" of dog
is not one of them.
Most purebred husky dog breeds were bred for a job......winning the Iditarod
was not one of them.
Incidently....there are plenty of purest Sib breeders that do run the Iditorod
successfully...they just finish somewhere near the bottom so you never hear
about them....they get there.....at the nice steady pace of a working dog.
All that said, I'm outrageously jealous of your experience. :o)

I meet 35 of the most incredible dogs (16 of whom pulled my fat behind on a
sled) in Alaska last week. I talked to the "MUSHER" who owned the dogs and came
in third place in last year's March race...1100 miles in 9 days in temperatures
between 20 and 40 degrees BELOW ZERO!...they don't use pure breed dogs,
although the base breeds are Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute, they are
mixed with Labs, Retrievers, Greyhounds, and yes German Shepherd Dogs.....this
musher stated ( and I forgot his name) that there were just too many health and
stamina issues with running pure bred dogs in the race. The increased gene pool
of other breeds made for a faster, stronger healthier over all Iditarod
racer...he called the mix breeds "Alaskan Huskies"...he went over all the
details of the race and how the dogs are all vet checked at certain check
points in the race, most Iditarod teams do not finish the race with the 16 dogs
that start the race. If a vet believes that a
dog should not or can not finish the race the dog is pulled from the team and
driven to the women's prison and cared for by inmates until the Musher can made
arrangements to go get his dog or have the dog shipped back to him.It's a
grueling brutal race...he told us stories that would make your skin curl!..His
dogs eat raw and kibble during the race and in the OFF season. The dogs I saw
looked healthy happy and for the most part well adjusted and friendly...My
favorite dog was a bitch named Hurley!...he bred her just before the March race
this year , ran her in the race, she finished the whole race with the team, and
on May 2 she had 4 happy healthy babies, last Thursday I got to play with them.
This so-called man's best friend has served us far better than we have served
