I  remember a rather heated discussion some years ago on the list about
size.
It was passionate and at time heated, if I remember right, but then my
memory is not... what were we talking about?

I have made it as clear as I can, I like a large German shepherd. We know
that the breed is to be a medium sized breed, but if the dog can move, and
does  so with proper structure, then I don't get hung up over size.  Movement
is  more important to me than size, every time.  I think anyone who has
seen me  judge knows that by now.  If not, here it is in writting.  You can
print this out and bring it to the show the next time I judge.

I also will put up a small dog or bitch, if everything else is correct. I
remember some smaller males that I have liked that had proper structure and
movement.  I remember one Grand Victor that I took on a lead, and was blown
away by  the movement. He was probably at the lower end of the standard as
far as size.

It is not popular for a judge to say that he or she does not feel bound by
a direction in the standard, but I have never worried about being popular.
I  remember a somewhat smaller Champion bitch Liz Leshhorn had that was
fantastic,  but every time I saw her, I thought she was a new puppy.  I also
remember  running behind Patriot the last time he was shown at the National,
and thinking  how could a normal human being keep up to a dog that large?
(That did  streach the meaning of normal).

I am not going to tout how much I follow the standard, and then go into the
ring and give the Breed to a 28 inch male.  It is better to tell it up
front, and then let everyone with the dogs they want, enter under me. If your
dog does approach 35 inches at the withers and is still a German shepherd,
it  had better be spectacular, however.

To me size is only important as it relates to the structure and movement of
the German shepherd. I agree that the guidelines are important, but it is
a  personal thing with me. I think of our breed as a strong, fierce, and
proud  animal.  At times, that can be reflected in a large male.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.
