I was doing some work with our local rescue group yesterday. We were
evaluating some dogs and I was impressed with how beautiful and well
behaved most
of these guys are. I can't believe that 99% are owner released. Oh,
but I
was in for a surprise.
A local BYB had a litter, and once they got to be about 4 months she
released the remaining 3 to a shelter, she didn't want to continue
feeding these
pups, the majority was already sold.
Way to go, bonehead. This is way many think breeders are the cause of
pet
overpopulation. Its taking a lot of my time to explain to the shelter
workers
the difference between a good breeder and a BYB. These pups are now in
the
rescue program. I guess we are lucky, the shelters in our area are
pretty good
about working with our rescue group.
Anyway, among these 3 is what I am convinced, a dwarf. It is a real
GSD,
but looks like a 3 month old pup. These pups are supposed to be close
to 10
months now. There is another person in the area that has a dwarf, with
all
kinds of health issues, I've seen it at the vet. I wonder if he got him
from the
same breeder.
Back to our rescued little one.......she is a long coat, and absolutely
adorable. Looks like a little scale model of my 103 lbs long coat. She
is a
doll!!!
We are going to ask our vet to check her for FPI, and see if that could
be
the problem.
Question to our vets on the list: what else should we look for? This
is a
first to all of us.
She eats well, she is actually overweight (LOL), her stools are good,
seems
healthy all around. We ran a Chem6/CBC on her and all results are
normal. I
don't know what else to look for.
