Why did I have to disqualify 1?=0D
If you care, I will describe the temperament test I used. =0D

At the last Advanced herding judges Institute held in Raleigh NC a couple
years ago, the GSDCA devoted its entire classroom portion to the loose le=
ad
temperament test. They showed the video, People discussed the reasons wh=
y
it came to be and why the GSDCA would like to see it incorporated in judg=
ing
GSDs. Then it was demo'd repeatedly during the hands on presentations. =
Not
once did I hear "boy they must have temperament problems that is why the=
y
are doing this" The overwhelming response from the over 100 conformation
judges attending (and I believe you have to have to be licensed for a gro=
up
in order to attend) was extremely positive. These are people who judge
weekend after weekend and see all kinds of dogs all over the country.=0D
 =0D
Other presenters who saw it thought it was a great idea and were taking i=
t
back to their clubs. These included OES, Briard and Belgian people. Yep
all the dogs that have a tendency to be less than ideal in temperament. =
We
were seen as very proactive in helping to resolve the temperament problem=
s
in our breed.=0D
 =0D
If you want to put your head in the sand and deny that we have problems a=
nd
that this just highlights it you go right ahead. That is just assbaass
backwardsou ask me. We still see GSDs quivering, tucking tails and looki=
ng
totally panicked in the ring and in the buildings at the all-breeds. And=
 as
Julie Degan stated, we still see them going up. Allowing judges to do a
loose lead temperament test also allows them to penalize the dogs that
should not be used as breeding stock. That takes that temperament out of
the line up and in to the light of the center of the ring so no one can
question why the judge did not put the animal up. The PC bringing this up=
 at
judges seminars throughout the country tells the show world that we are
serious about temperament and that we don't want to see these dogs
wiwinningither. This is a very far cry from twenty + years ago when
handlers would brag about how much easier it was to finish a spook than i=
t
was to finish a sound one. Spooks run f=0D
  aster.=0D
 =0D
Do we still have temperament issues, you bet. That is why insurance
companies don't want to insure us, veterinarians don't want to see us and
some of our neighbors want to institute breed specific legislation agains=
t
us. You can say, "but I didn't breed those dogs," or "they're not really
GSDs they are mixes..." or whatever. But we are the guardians of the bre=
ed,
so we must take a proactive stance. WE must make it clear to the show wo=
rld
and to the public that that type of temperament is not tolerated. That i=
s
why we need to keep using the loose lead evaluation and continue to refin=
e
it. That is why it is also important to convince all breed judges to als=
o
use it and we must educate them on how to do it correctly. If we are
bettter today than twenty years ago, it is because we elected board membe=
rs
who also valued temperment and made it the priority it should have always
been.=0D
