It wasn't so very long ago that "hybrid" almost always meant it was a cross between wolf and dog. Couple days ago I had a labradoodle in the shop I work at -- and frankly after looking all over, had to ask the manager where my dog was....the dog she pointed out looked more like a wolfhound pup than anything else. A few years ago, I worked with a woman who paid - FIVE THOUSAND - yep that's NOT a typo -- for a lab/newfie cross. The sire and dam were allegedly breed champions. (I can only say "allegedly" because of course, there were no papers on this mix.) AS the puppy grew, it looked like this dog had all the lab characteristics but no newfie. She felt "Ripped off" because she got a purebred lab. Adding to her complaints was the fact that the poor dog needed both hips entirely replaced by one year of age. I did obedience and other things with my first GSD - she was most likely mixed, she was small and a bit fluffy like a coat, so we were able to ILP her so I could compete in obedience. We lost her to cancer at 12 1/2. My first purebred GSD was a coat, and he died in his sleep at 12 1/2. At 12 1/2 I had no interest in an autopsy. He did have signs of DM the last year of his life, but for the most part, I believe he stayed young-acting because after we lost Misty, he took over the pack, and thoroughly enjoyed his status. It was his sworn duty to beat up the younger males -- especially when they came back from a show. He never hurt them of course, but he DID make it clear that even though they were out with "Mom" -- they shouldn't let it go to their heads! I don't necessarily believe that mixed breeds are healthier - I just believe that since there a lot of mixes, it's almost impossible to label any health problems as "typical" for mixed breeds. They carry whatever may be in their background, just like a purebred does.
