I absolutely agree with Helen, 150%! And there is definite
precedent for the above among other AKC Parent Clubs.
I am a longtime member of the English Setter Association
of America. (English are my first breed and first loves.)
At the June 1998 ESAA Board of Directors meeting, the
Board adopted the following resolution:
"Code of Ethics: The Code of Ethics was adopted by
the ESAA Board of Directors and will be incorporated
into the New Member Application as well as the
Renewal Application, both of which shall require
signatures. Unsigned new applications and renewals
shall be returned to the applicant for completion."
"Prospective New Members and Renewals: The entire
New Member Application (all pages) or Renewal
Membership forms must be printed, completed, signed
and returned to the Membership Chairman. If all pages
are not sent to the Membership Chairman, the
application/renewal will be considered incomplete and
returned to the applicant."
And every year since that time, we all have to sign the
back of the member renewal that we agree to abide by the
Club's COE or we don't get to renew our dues. Period! Of
course... There is nothing in our COE about puppy mills or
not selling to pet stores. Then again, ours is really not
your typical mill/pet store breed. (THANK YOU GOD!!)
I would *definitely* be in favor of a mandatory COE for
GSDCA. I'm not a signer of the current Club Breeder's Code
because I don't breed any dogs. But I would be an
enthusiastic signer of the COE... especially if it were
necessary for membership. ;)
