Helen,

Last summer I judged in Australia (specialty show and all-breed) and was 
impressed with there dogs. All German lines (or Norway, Italian) and some of 
them were imported from Germany. They were absolutely beautiful animals. So I 
agree with you...

I used to say, “The only good thing out of Germany, is a Mercedes.”  Well, 
I’m here to eat a large helping of humble pie.  Having bred and owned many 
Champions, Selects, an AOE, Maturity Victrix, ROM’s, etc., and having judged 
4 Nationals, ( 1 Canadian), I thought I knew “the score” regarding our 
german shepherd dogs.  But the nice thing is, you are never too old to learn. 
 Recently exposed to great german dogs and visiting german kennels, has been an 
eye opener.  Imagine a kennel filled with several litters and they all looked 
alike; they all had ears (without tape) black and red red, bone, dark eyes, and 
exceptional temperament.  They did not have carp backs which I now think is 
the way they are posed for pictures (and can’t understand why), but nice 
straight backs,  depth of body, and good conformation.  It was also 
interesting to see some oldies, 14, 15 and 16.  Average life span is 14.  

 

I have hung up the whelping box but were I still breeding dogs, I would most 
definitely add some of what the germans have created.  We can use their 
pigment, character, heads, bone, eye color and longevity.  Out crossing done 
with knowledge, improves health, stamina and injects qualities needed.  
Further, we may have more extreme side gait but is that really everything?  It 
shouldn’t be but we have made it so. I’d rather have less side gait in my 
14 year old dog then a “flye
r” that I lose at 10. We need to concentrate on the TOTAL dog without 
blindness to “flash.”  I do believe that the german dogs can do great work 
without an obsession for extreme reach, and they prove it with titles.  I do 
hope that some of you will take to heart what I have written and become more 
open to change.  At least take a serious look at what the germans are 
producing.  I have, and I like it.
